The long tail is the real story. Here is the thing that surprises most people: no single mascot dominates. More than a third of the species we ship are "one of a kind" picks - turkeys, potatoes, moose, alligators, skunks, even a wolf-grizzly mascot story that only makes sense to one school in the country. Methodology - how we got these numbers

This analysis is based on custom mascot orders shipped directly from our stores between 2019 and 2026, filtered to orders of mascot costumes (not accessories), grouped by species and by the state the costume shipped to. More than 400 such orders are represented, spanning 45+ states. Because this is a single manufacturer's order book - not a full census of every school in America - treat the national rankings as highly directional and the state-level observations as regional signals rather than official tallies. Where they cross-reference well-known public lists of the most common school mascots, the two sources agree on the winners - which is the strongest signal that the data is pointing at the truth.
